whittling down the great Gospel

This is a one of my favorite thoughts from Richard Rohr, and always helpful when we hear religious people claiming moral high ground that does not ring true for us or when we ourselves begin to feel morally superior:

“Many Christians whittle down the great Gospel to some moral issue over which they can feel totally triumphant and superior, and which usually asks nothing of them personally. The ego always insists on moral high ground.”
